AI Commission to Consider First Set of Recommendations

Post

The SREB AI in Education Commission will consider six draft policy recommendations at its meeting in November 2024 They address targeted guidance, state standards, professional development, statewide AI networks, local capacity to integrate AI across K-12 and higher education, and the development of cost models related to integrating AI successfully in K-12 and postsecondary.

These draft recommendations are the first to emerge from many hours of study and discussion by the Commission’s policy subcommittee. They prioritize critical time-sensitive actions that do not require legislation to move forward, said SREB Policy Director Jeff Gagne.

The Commission is reviewing the drafts during October, and after the full group’s decision in November, SREB will publish this initial set of recommendations and guidance in late 2024 or early 2025. More will follow over the course of the Commission and culminate in a final report in 2026.

“AI is happening fast, so we will be sharing guidance as it is vetted by the Commission rather than waiting for a full report at the end of two years,” said SREB President Stephen L. Pruitt. “We want to get this framework into the hands of states and educators who need them now.”
